Touchdesigner training
DIGITAL CREATION AND REAL-TIME INTERACTIVITY FOR LIVE PERFORMANCE

Speakers :

Vincent Sanjivy – Multimedia engineer

Christophe Luez – Graphic designer

Objective: This course explores digital creation for installation art and live performance.
Participants will be trained in TouchDesigner software, the benchmark tool for real-time digital creation. Its nodal programming interface facilitates the custom design of tools dedicated to the scenography of concerts, plays, immersive installations, museography…
The aim of this training course is to give you the keys to meeting the new needs of interactive digital creation. The tools and methods covered will serve as a foundation for your future creations in the performing arts.

Presentation: The workshop will be built around new Machine Learning tools dedicated to real-time video analysis.
Participants will learn how to use their webcam with the MediaPipe library, an open-source library that uses AI to deduce complex data from a simple video stream.
MediaPipe’s capabilities include 3D body tracking, face detection, gesture recognition and image content identification. This technology eliminates the need for dedicated Kinect-type peripherals for digital body capture. Its integration within TouchDesigner makes it possible to create interactive installations with a simple camera.

Participant profile: This course is aimed at creative and/or professional performers, confirmed or amateur artists and students.
Visual and/or sound digital practice and programming experience would be beneficial.
Participants should have an appetite for custom tool design and programmatic logic. Touchdesigner is a complex tool, and its range of possibilities is limited to your imagination. But above all, it’s a visual programming language that requires hard work to achieve results. You’ll need to have a sense of autonomy, and a good ability to fetch information.
The TouchDesigner community is very rich in knowledge sharing, and it’s your curiosity that will enable you to progress.

Equipment required: A recent computer (PC or Mac), with a dedicated graphics card, is required to take part in the training.

Planning:

Session 1: February 24 to 28, 2025.

The first session will aim to make participants autonomous on Touchdesigner. Techniques for creating generative visuals, sound interaction, the use of VSTs, real-time 3D and video-mapping will be covered.

Session 2 remote follow-up: 5 remote appointments during the month of March.

Participants will have one month to develop an immersive interactive installation, which will be shown at the EFEST festival. Projects will be carried out in groups and a global theme will be chosen. Remote follow-up will be provided by the lecturers, with regular meetings focused on each project.

Session 3: April 7 to 10, 2025.

The final training session will take place at the festival venue in Ksar El Ferch. It will be dedicated to finalizing the projects and implementing them in situ, taking into account the constraints linked to welcoming an audience and the adjustments necessary for broadcasting an immersive digital work.

Session 4: Public presentation: April 11 – 12 – 13, 2025
The groups formed will be invited to exhibit their works during the festival.
